Dictation Studio

A practice room for melodic and harmonic dictation. Excerpts come from the 366 usable Bach chorales of the Breitkopf 371 (encoded by Craig Sapp) or from a rule-based four-part writing generator that obeys common-practice voice leading.

How to practice

  1. Choose mode, source and playback pacing. The key and meter are always given, as in an exam.
  2. Press Start. The key is established, then the excerpt plays the set number of times with silent writing gaps.
  3. Write what you hear. Reveal shows the engraved answer (with Roman numerals for generated harmonic exercises).
  4. Grade yourself honestly — the log tracks your progress.
